DOT Advisory Committee to Discuss Issues in Display and Sale of Airline Ancillary Services
July 30th, 2012

August 7 hearing to explore the importance of providing consumers with the ability to see, compare and buy the all-in costs of airline fares

WHAT: The Department of Transportation’s Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protection will hold its second hearing on August 7th to include discussion and presentations regarding the display and sale of airline ancillary services through third-party distributors used by airline to distribute base fares, including global distribution systems (GDSs).

WHO: On behalf of the Interactive Travel Services Association, (ITSA), Chris Kroeger, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sabre Travel Network, Shelly Terry, Senior Director Air Merchandising, Sabre Travel Network and David Schwarte, Sabre Special Counsel will discuss the importance of the ability of consumers to see, compare and buy the all-in costs of airline ancillary fees, and the GDSs ability to address this important consumer issue.  Representative of other ITSA members, including other GDSs, will also be present.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 7, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The GDSs and ancillary services panel will be held in the afternoon.

WHERE: Meeting Rooms 8, 9, and 10 at the Department of Transportation’s headquarters, 1200 New Jersey Ave. SE., Washington, DC 20590.

WHY: With the rising reliance on airline ancillary fee revenue (U.S. airlines made more than $22 billion in ancillary fee revenue in 2011), it is more important than ever that consumers have an understanding of the ancillary fees that they may encounter, such as seat reservation and baggage fees. The Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protection, a Committee set up by Congress in the FAA reauthorization legislation, heard testimony about this issue from a wide range of consumer, business and travel organizations at their first meeting, and they have asked for a more in-depth hearing on how airline tickets are sold and the capabilities of having these fees displayed to consumers in 3rd party distribution channels.
